This colorful, layered composition combines figurative portraiture, landscape, and art-historical references. A central male figure anchors the scene, surrounded by loosely rendered figures, expressive linework, and a richly colored landscape. At left, Dawson incorporates an interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, while a smaller landscape appears as a painting within the painting.

The combination of detailed portraiture, gestural brushwork, drips, and spontaneous drawing gives the work an expressive, contemporary character. Its substantial scale and vibrant palette make it an excellent statement piece for a large interior.

John Allan Dawson (American, b. 1946) is a painter and sculptor known for expressive figurative work. Born in Joliet, Illinois, Dawson earned his BFA from the University of New Mexico in 1969 and his MFA from Arizona State University in 1974. His career has encompassed painting, drawing, works on paper, and sculpture, with works represented in museum and private collections across the United States. Dawson has exhibited extensively, including more than 60 solo exhibitions, and his work has been associated with Arizona Opera and Ballet Arizona. His work has also been featured or reviewed in publications including ARTnews, Artweek, and Southwest Art. See less
