based first in shanghai then in suzhou, wei yi has been acclaimed in the late 2000s and early 2010s for his huge paintings, where he investigates social issues in his rampant country such as children aids, prostitution, poverty, drugs and so on.

a documentary filmmaker as well, he has been jailed several times for his reluctance to look the other way. Since mid 2010s, it has not been possible to contact him through normal channels, and his whereabouts are not disclosed.

this is one of the few left paintings from the series "ladies of the carnal world"

about this painting (as written by the artist himself and translated by his former curator):
"a triptych encompasses three separate canvases with drastically diverted forms, colours and locations, and yet achieves an overall harmony. On the left, a little girl (the anti-heroine in her childhood) inhibits the majority of the canvas. Her dreams of sunshine and future, her naivety grizzle into obscurity of lasting memory of the past. On the right, deep into the night oozes a mysterious, suggestive pinkish light illuminating the“hair saloon”. Inside the equivocal hair saloon, languid women wait on customers.
a real daily scene of our anti-heroine at present time, the painting reflects the shadowy reality, quite, brutal and gloomy. In the painting in the center, the largest of the three, a close-up of a young woman's face in pink tones stands out. The erogenous lips of the face, drawn in great details, seem to tell of the infatuations, illusions, pleasures of her life, as if in a carnal world people dance only to the beat of insatiable desires".
