The Romantic subject, featuring the 14th-century Chapter House at Haughmond Abbey in Shrewsbury, draws on Rev William Gilpin's aesthetic principles of the picturesque, exquisitely placed between the 'sublime' and the 'beautiful'. Interestingly, the view shows the roof area of the Chapter House considerably more intact than it is today.The painting formed part of a series commissioned in 1832 by Catherine Johnstone née Brome (1775–1833), who was married to William Johnstone, Vicar of Culmington, Ludlow.On buff-coloured paper laid down on backing paper.All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography.
