Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble quarried in the Carrara region of Tuscany, known to Renaissance Florence as Breccia Medicea, the marble of the Medici. Across a cool white ground run veins of violet, burgundy and plum, drawn with the loose confidence of brushwork rather than the regularity of geology. Each top is cut from the block it came from, so no two of these Calacatta Viola marble side tables share the same figure.

The base is the quieter feat. Two slabs of the same stone are notched and set at right angles, one passing through the other, so the piece carries itself with no brackets and no visible fixing. What holds it up is exactly what draws the eye.
