The carpet … Read more A very attractive and finely woven late-19th-century Persian Senneh Malayer carpet in an unusually desirable long gallery format. The carpet features a dense all-over arrangement of repeating boteh motifs, carefully organized in horizontal rows across a rich, very dark indigo-blue field. This type of boteh drawing has strong associations with both Senneh and Malayer weaving traditions.

Each boteh is intricately worked with small floral elements in shades of madder red, rose, salmon, ivory, soft green, blue and touches of yellow. The repetition creates a strong rhythm across the unusually long field, while the variation of color within the individual motifs prevents the design from becoming overly formal.

One of the most appealing features is the wide ivory main border, which provides a dramatic contrast to the dark field. It is decorated with a continuous angular flowering vine, large stylized blossoms and smaller floral elements in red, blue, green and gold. Several narrow guard borders in warm rust and terracotta tones complete the composition and give the carpet a particularly rich architectural frame.

The close photograph shows the fine, tight weave and relatively low-cut pile, characteristics frequently associated with finer Malayer weaving, where a closely clipped pile helps bring out the precision of the drawing.

In good condition for its circa-1890 age, this is a particularly decorative and collectible carpet. The combination of its approximately 6-foot width, 15½-foot length, fine quality, dark indigo field, ivory border and highly detailed boteh pattern makes it much more versatile than a conventional narrow runner.
