A finely decorated Japanese Imari porcelain plate dating to the Meiji period (late 19th century), featuring a central underglaze blue medallion with a stylized dragon or aquatic creature emerging from swirling water.
The composition is arranged in a series of cloud-shaped (kumo) panels radiating from the center, each filled with traditional motifs including bamboo, floral sprays, and geometric patterning in iron red, green, and gilt. These reserves are separated by gilded bands and alternating patterned sections, creating a dynamic yet balanced design.
The use of negative space within the cloud panels gives the piece a lighter, more refined presence than densely decorated Imari examples, while the central blue medallion provides a strong visual anchor.
The exterior is decorated in underglaze cobalt with stylized cloud and scrolling motifs, offering a subtle decorative contrast when viewed in profile.
