This pair of Multipls Chairs by French designer Joseph Mathieu are extremely rare both for their woven seats and for … Read more This pair of Multipls Chairs by French designer Joseph Mathieu are extremely rare both for their woven seats and for the incredible condition of the original orange/red paint. Both chairs have minimal signs of wear or use, far less than expected for something of their age and function (nearly 100 years). The paint color is still vibrant and although the paint surface itself does have some small scratches and scrapes here and there the paint is not dried, cracked or flaking. The original woven rush seats have very minimal signs of use with some small areas of cracks or breaks, but otherwise they're solid and strong.

The Multipls chair was designed by Mathieu in 1922 and in 1934, Xavier Pauchard (another French furniture designer) created the Tolix chair which was very similar in design to Mathieu's Multipls chair and has been mass-produced to this day (very often for cafe seating). At first glance they appear to be one and the same, however the original Multipls chair has several very distinct differences. The original Multipls chair was designed with a slightly more rounded back along the sides and a more delicate looking pierced or perforated back design as seen in this particular example. This chair has its original red/orange paint and its original woven rush seat.

Seat measures 15 inches x 15 inches.
Seat height measures 18 inches
Seat back measures 16 inches tall from seat surface and approximately 17.5 inches across at its widest point.
Legs are 16 inches across (front to back) and 15 inches across (side to side).
Chair is 33.5 inches from floor to top of seat back.

Condition: VERY GOOD considering its age. The rush seats have a handful of areas where very small portions of the rush is missing or broken (see photos). There are areas where the paint is scratched or scraped (the chairs are stackable). Otherwise they have wear consistent with age. See less
