Suspended just above, a fish hangs weightless in the air, as though gravity has simply forgotten it — unmistakably Talani's signature motif, appearing here with the quiet authority of something that has always belonged. Below, a shallow bowl holds a mound of pomegranates, their skins ranging from ochre to deep burgundy. The surface is built up in loose, searching strokes that give the composition an air of timelessness no tidy still life could produce.

Giampaolo Talani (1955-2018) was born in San Vincenzo, on the Tuscan coast, and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under Goffredo Trovarelli. He became one of the foremost practitioners of fresco in contemporary Italian art, completing public commissions at Florence's Santa Maria Novella station, the Quirinale Palace in Rome, and for the Italian Senate. He exhibited at the 54th Venice Biennale and received the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
