The scene is likely to be in the Pyrenees region of Spain, an area which Oliver favoured in his paintings. The composition is constructed to be particularly atmospheric, with small splashes of red enlivening the figures' local dress, and symbolically, the wayside cross serving as a waymark for the walkers, possibly designating a dangerous place or suggestive of a pilgrimage.This watercolour has until now been hidden from view in a Victorian album and forms part of our Sir William Vernon Guise Collection.in watercolour with gum arabic to intensify the colour.All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography.
