an oliver no. 9 in the original olive green finish. The plate above the keyboard reads the oliver typewriter co. Ltd., 75 queen victoria street, london e.c., so this one was sold through the company's british branch. The manufacturer's plate on the front of the base gives chicago, u.s.a. — the machine was built in the states and shipped over for the british market. That is also why the keyboard is plain english qwerty with no accented characters.

the no. 9 was made between 1915 and 1922. It is the model where the shift keys sit on both sides of the keyboard.

this is the oliver everyone recognises: two banks of u-shaped typebars standing upright on either side, striking down onto the platen from above. Oliver called it a visible writer, because you could read what you had just typed without lifting anything. Three-row keyboard with double shift, tabulator, and the curved side handles the collectors call ears.

condition: the carriage moves and the mechanism works. The paint has honest wear and small chips consistent with its age. One key top is slightly darker than the rest from a century of use. This piece has an attribution mark,
