The lid is hand-painted … Read more A very rare & charming antique lacquered papier-mâché box, Continental (likely German, Brunswick tradition), 19th century. The lid is hand-painted with a portrait of an elderly bearded man in a rich green mantle, rendered in the tronie tradition popularized by Dutch Old Masters such as Rembrandt — a subject frequently copied on fine German lacquer boxes of this period, in the manner of the celebrated Stobwasser factory of Braunschweig. The body is finished in deep black lacquer, with the painted portrait set within the circular lid.
