A sculptural stoneware vase produced by Michael Andersen & Søn on the Danish island of Bornholm during the 1960s. About the Manufacturer

Founded in 1890 by Michael Andersen, Michael Andersen & Søn became one of Bornholm's most important ceramic manufacturers. The workshop gained international recognition for combining traditional Danish craftsmanship with modern forms and experimental glazes. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, its production helped establish Bornholm as one of Scandinavia's leading centres for studio ceramics, alongside the celebrated potteries of Sweden and Finland.

Design

The vase is composed of two balanced geometric volumes: a rounded lower body supporting a gently tapering cylindrical neck. This restrained composition highlights the contrast between the tactile, unglazed stoneware and the richly flowing volcanic glaze. Shades of pale ice blue, cobalt, and deep indigo cascade across the lower section, breaking naturally at the edges to reveal the warm reddish-brown clay beneath. The resulting surface evokes weathered rock, mineral deposits, and flowing water, capturing the close relationship between Scandinavian ceramics and the natural landscape.

Marked on the underside with the Michael Andersen & Søn hallmark, "Danmark," and model number 6139.
