About the Designers

Jette Andersen is known for creating sculptural stoneware that celebrates the natural qualities of clay through restrained forms and expressive glazes. Her work reflects the Scandinavian studio pottery movement's emphasis on craftsmanship, balance, and material authenticity.

Marianne Starck (1938–2007) was one of the most influential designers associated with Michael Andersen & Søn on Bornholm. Joining the company in the 1950s, she introduced a distinctive modern aesthetic characterised by architectural forms, sophisticated glaze combinations, and an exceptional sensitivity to texture. Her designs played a significant role in establishing Bornholm ceramics as an internationally recognised expression of Danish modern design.

Design

Although created by different designers, these two works complement one another remarkably well. The vase presents a confident architectural profile, with a cylindrical body expanding into broad shoulders before narrowing into a small opening. Layered glazes in cream, brown, and charcoal flow naturally across the upper section, creating subtle variations that recall weathered stone and volcanic landscapes.

The lidded box offers a quieter, more intimate counterpart. Its compact cylindrical form is enriched by softly banded glazes in warm earth tones, while the lid features an abstract circular motif that serves as a restrained focal point.
