Known as "Kaskade" (German for "Cascade") , the rectangular body is covered with a deeply modelled relief that shifts between stacked waves, folds, and pleats. The changing depth of the pattern gives each side a different optical rhythm, while the dry exterior contrasts subtly with the smooth glazed interior. This example was produced in 1994.

The vase has a strong architectural presence without relying on color. Because the relief changes across each face, it works especially well where daylight or directional lighting can reveal the varying depth of the surface. Its broad proportions give it enough volume for a sideboard, stone console, or low pedestal, particularly alongside dark wood, travertine, brushed metal, or other restrained materials.

Hans Martin Freyer (1909–1974) was a German painter and graphic artist whose work extended into architecture, textiles, stage design, and product design. Rosenthal also credits him with the design of the Volkswagen emblem. from 1964 to 1974, he developed relief structures for Rosenthal porcelain and glass, including the celebrated “Plissée” vases. His designs frequently transformed the surface itself into the principal decorative element.

Rosenthal was founded in Selb, Bavaria, in 1879. Its Studio-Line programme, launched in 1961, brought contemporary artists, architects, and designers into serial porcelain production.
