Mouly came up through the postwar École de Paris, working alongside Picasso, Matisse, and Braque. His prints and paintings are held in the permanent collections of more than 20 museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. He was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1957 and received the Premier Prix de Lithographie in 1973.

This vibrant Cubist-influenced still life, a candle and vessel on a tabletop before a framed picture and patterned wall, is rendered in Mouly's signature bold, high-key palette of red, blue, green, and gold. Professionally framed under glass in an ornate gilt rope-twist and laurel-pattern frame, with a black fillet and double cream mat.

A label on the backing board documents professional framing and confirms title and artist attribution; from a private Portland, Oregon collection.
