The sofa features a tall architectural wood frame with turned and geometric details, rolled upholstered arms, and deep burgundy mohair plush with elaborate classical ornamentation, including urns, garlands, swags, and floral motifs. The overall design reflects the German Historicist tradition of the Gründerzeit period, with strong neoclassical and Empire Revival influences.

Traditional upholstery construction remains visible beneath the seat, including coil springs and woven webbing. The tall backrest lifts off the base, an original practical feature that also makes the sofa considerably easier to move.

The piece retains considerable visual presence and much of its historic upholstery, but it is being offered in unrestored antique condition. The mohair has significant losses and wear at the rolled arms, including exposed padding, along with age-related fading, compression, and general surface wear elsewhere. The wood frame shows normal marks and patina consistent with age.

We have intentionally left the sofa unrestored so that its next owner can determine the appropriate level of conservation or reupholstery. The surviving mohair, decorative detailing, traditional spring construction, and Berlin provenance make it an appealing candidate for sympathetic restoration.

A striking piece of German Historicist furniture suitable for a period interior, library, parlor, hospitality setting, photography or film use, or a serious restoration project.
