A vase from the "Kallio" series — the word means "rock" in Finnish - designed by Kaj Blomqvist for Kumela … Read more A vase from the "Kallio" series — the word means "rock" in Finnish - designed by Kaj Blomqvist for Kumela Oy in 1969 and produced through the 1970s.

The square-sectioned body is mould-blown into a deeply pitted, fissured surface that reads as a face of split granite, and the colour runs as a gradient: near-black brown at the rim, through honey amber, down to almost colourless at the foot. Held against the light the whole thing turns molten.
Thick-walled and heavy for its size — the density is part of the point.

Signed on the base and retaining its original Kumela factory label.

Kumela was founded in Riihimäki in 1933 and moved from utility glass into decorative art glass through the 1960s, with Kaj Blomqvist, Armando Jacobino and Pentti Sarpaneva shaping its modern output. The family sold the works to Humppila in the mid-1970s, which makes the Blomqvist years the factory's high point for collectors.

Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks or bruises; the fissured surface is sharp throughout and the rim is clean. Signed on the base "Kaj Blomqvist Kumela Oy Finland", and the original Kumela factory label is still in place. This piece has an attribution mark,
