designer angelo mangiarotti (milan, 1921 – milan, 2012) italian architect, sculptor, and designer, one of the leading figures of late 20th-century modernism, esteemed for his refined and rigorous approach to materials. He earned his degree in architecture from the polytechnic university of milan in 1948 and then moved to the united states, where he served as a visiting professor at the illinois institute of technology in chicago and forged relationships with frank lloyd wright, walter gropius, ludwig mies van der rohe, and konrad wachsmann—figures who profoundly influenced his work. Upon his return to italy, he pursued ongoing research into the essentiality of form and the integrity of materials—from marble to ceramics to glass—collaborating with knoll, skipper, gabbianelli, agape, and fratelli brambilla, among others. Since 2010, agape casa has been producing his most famous designs under license. His works are housed in major international design museums.
