Dating to circa 1915, this impressive antique metal jewelry casket is a beautifully substantial example of early 20th-century decorative craftsmanship. With its architectural form, richly detailed surfaces, and wonderfully aged finish, the box has the presence of a miniature work of sculpture.
Each side of the casket is embellished with an elaborate dimensional relief depicting neoclassical scenes, including figures, horses, chariots, and ornamental motifs inspired by the art and mythology of the ancient world. The sloping lid continues the decoration with another detailed figural composition surrounded by an ornate scrolling border, while the front retains its original keyhole.
The casket measures approximately 7.5 inches wide, 4 inches deep, and 3.5 inches high. Particularly noteworthy is the casket's construction. Made from thick, heavy metal, it weighs more than 2 pounds, giving it a remarkably solid and substantial feel for its size. The surface has developed a handsome untouched timeworn patina that settles beautifully into the recessed details and accentuates the intricate relief work. Good antique condition, some soiling/staining to the interior silk lining, marker numbers on base. Please review the photos for further condition.
