A striking and substantial Western bronze by noted sculptor D. Michael Thomas, They Called Him Jackson Sundown portrays the legendary Nez Perce cowboy and rodeo champion Jackson Sundown in commanding, finely observed detail.
Cast in 2011 and numbered 3/25, this is an especially early example from the limited edition. The sculpture stands approximately 31 inches high × 16 inches long × 14 inches wide and is rendered in a restrained monochromatic patina, giving the work a notably sculptural and understated presence compared with later polychrome examples of the composition.
Thomas depicts Sundown standing beside his saddle and hide, dressed in Western clothing with deeply modeled textural detail throughout the hat, braided hair, fringed sleeves, belt, garments, boots, saddle, and ground. The figure’s upright stance and distant gaze give the sculpture a strong sense of dignity and historical presence.
The bronze is signed by the artist and marked 3/25, with additional copyright and identifying marks incorporated into the base. A title plaque on the front reads “They Called Him Jackson Sundown – D. Michael Thomas.”
Jackson Sundown (1863–1923), a Nez Perce cowboy and nephew of Chief Joseph, became one of the most celebrated Native American figures in early rodeo history. At age 53, he won the 1916 World Championship bronc riding title at the Pendleton Round-Up and was later inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame.
This example has remained in a private family collection and is accompanied by framed D. Michael Thomas presentation material identifying the sculpture and its subject.
An impressive work of contemporary Western sculpture with exceptional scale, low edition number, and a distinctive monochromatic finish, They Called Him Jackson Sundown would make a powerful focal point in a Western, Southwestern, lodge, ranch, library, or collector’s interior.
