This is a magnificent vintage Chinese hardwood box (likely Zitan or high-quality Rosewood), featuring exquisite Mother-of-Pearl (MOP) inlay.
The box is rectangular with a raised, "openwork" frame on the lid. The central panel features a delicate, hand-crafted inlay scene of goldfish swimming among blooming lotus flowers and aquatic plants. In Chinese culture, this motif (fish and lotus) represents "Abundance Year After Year" and "Prosperity." The lid is also bordered with intricate scalloped cloud patterns.
The wood is deep, dark reddish-brown, showing an incredible natural grain and an aged, smooth patina. The front of the box is fitted with a beautiful, original brass lock plate.
This box is the perfect size for storing tea, jewelry, calligraphy tools, or other small treasures. It is a striking example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship that will bring elegance and a touch of history to any bookshelf, coffee table, or dresser.
