This large stoneware vessel is a Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) wine jar, originally filled with wine and spirits made from rice and other grains. The large pot is sculpted with a tapered silhouette and bears traces of the maker’s hand in its irregular surface. Ridges at the bottom reveal its coiled construction, while a faceted texture at the top reveals how its curves were shaped with a paddle. An opaque, dark brown glaze sheets down the sides, lingering on every imperfection with streaks of light brown color and subtle iridescence.
