Vico Magistretti designed the Maralunga for Cassina in 1973, followed by the Compasso d'Oro in 1979. The story behind it is legendary: Cesare Cassina is said to have disliked the prototype so much that he struck it, breaking the backrest, which then fell into the very bent shape that makes the piece famous today. The principle is particularly clear in the armchair—the side panels frame the seat, above which the armrests protrude like separate cushions. The real ingenuity lies invisibly within the upholstery. An ordinary bicycle chain is embedded in the foam of the backrest—you use it to fold the back cushion upwards, where it becomes a headrest. with a single movement, the low lounge chair transforms into a high-backed chair with full neck support, and back again. Placed opposite each other, the two chairs form a cohesive seating group, and because they come from the same production batch, the leather tone and patina are perfectly matched.
