between 1978 and 1985.

The centre is a dome of deep green worked into a dense, seeded texture like the head of a sunflower or a pine cone seen from above, and it is ringed by a collar of clear glass torn open into radiating petals with a raw, frost-like surface. The two are cast as one: the green bleeds outward into the clear at every junction. Set on a table it throws green light back up through the petals.

Humppila was founded in 1952 by the Helander brothers, former glassblowers at Nuutajärvi. It absorbed the Kumela works in 1979 and was itself taken over by Nuutajärvi in 1986 - a small factory whose 1970s and early 1980s output is now sought after well beyond Finland. Santalahti's work is held in the collections
of the Finnish Glass Museum.

Santalahti (1941-2015) trained as a sculptor at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and graduated as a designer in 1962. He joined Humppila in 1971 and was the factory's artistic director from 1974 — Kasvimaalla belongs to that period. His work is held in the Finnish Glass Museum, the Design Museum, Helsinki Art Museum and Tampere's museum of contemporary art.
