The sculptural … Read more A striking 20th-century horizontal Chi Wara antelope headdress attributed to the Bamana (Bambara) people of Mali, West Africa. The sculptural crest is closely related to the horizontal n'gonzon koun tradition and features an elongated zoomorphic form with dramatically swept-back horns, a crouching body, curled tail and extensive hand-incised geometric decoration. The carved wood sculpture retains its woven basketry cap, along with natural-fiber bindings, cowrie-shell pendants and bead accents. Horizontal Chi Wara forms were created as sculptural headcrests associated with Bamana agricultural traditions and were historically secured to woven caps for performance. The piece exhibits substantial age-related character throughout, including surface rubbing and abrasion to the wood, wear and losses to the basketry, fraying to textile and natural-fiber elements and weathering to the suspended ornaments.
