Large vintage John-Richard framed botanical and natural history print titled “Hortus Nucum,” or “Garden of Nuts.” The reverse retains its … Read more Large vintage John-Richard framed botanical and natural history print titled “Hortus Nucum,” or “Garden of Nuts.” The reverse retains its original John-Richard manufacturer’s label identifying the work as GRF-1873, “Hortus Nucum,” 30 x 36 inches, from the company’s Greenwood, Mississippi production.
The colorful composition is based on an 18th-century engraving by I.G. Pintz from Swiss naturalist Johann Jakob Scheuchzer’s monumental illustrated work Physica Sacra. The historic image, titled Hortus Nucum, depicts an orderly grove of nut trees framed by an elaborate Baroque architectural cartouche, with oversized nuts and botanical specimens arranged in the foreground. The original engraving dates to approximately 1735.
This later John-Richard decorative reproduction retains the wonderfully eccentric combination of botanical study, landscape, biblical imagery, and elaborate Baroque ornament found in Scheuchzer’s original plate. Rich greens, blues, muted reds and warm neutrals are complemented by an unusually substantial antiqued bronze-gold frame and wide textured metallic mat.

The large 30 x 36 inch scale gives the piece considerable presence and makes it particularly well suited to a dining room, library, study, entry, living room or collected gallery wall. Its old-world natural-history aesthetic works beautifully in traditional, English country, grandmillennial, maximalist, European-inspired and eclectic interiors.

John-Richard was founded in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1980, and notably began with a collection of hand-colored wall engravings before expanding into luxury furniture, lighting and decorative accessories.
Original John-Richard label remains affixed to the reverse.
This is a late-20th-century decorative reproduction of the historic engraving and is not an original 1735 print.
