Several pieces bear the J.P.L. France / Limoges porcelain mark, associated with Jean Pouyat Limoges. The hand-painted decoration appears to have been executed separately, and pieces are signed or initialed “H.A.H.”, presumably identifying the decorator. We have not positively identified the artist and make no attribution beyond the visible signature/initials.

This is an especially unusual and highly decorative set featuring wonderfully executed humorous character and tavern-style scenes. Each mug has a different figural subject against a different colored ground, while the large tankard features a jovial gentleman at the table. The charger is decorated with colorful panels depicting playing cards, card suits, dice, a pipe, cigar and matches, giving the entire service a great turn-of-the-century gaming, smoking and gentlemen’s-club character. Extensive gilt accents finish the rims, handles and decoration.

* Charger/tray: approx. 15.75” diameter x 1” thick
