Wonderful antique folk art hand-carved wooden box or casket featuring extensive geometric chip-carved decoration throughout.
The rectangular box is richly decorated on the front, sides and lid with deeply carved geometric, floral and star-like motifs. The raised paneled lid has additional carving and a row of decorative wooden bosses. The stepped base is finished with carved scalloped detailing, giving the piece a particularly strong architectural appearance.
The hinged lid opens to reveal an old deep red velvet-lined interior. A keyhole is present on the front; no key is included and I am unsure if the lock works
Overall measures approximately:
15 1/2” wide x 9 1/2” deep x 9 1/2” high.
Estate-fresh antique condition with attractive old surface and patina. There is a shrinkage/age crack along the wooden base, as clearly photographed, along with expected scattered scratches, finish wear, small separations and other signs of age and use. The interior velvet shows age and wear. Please review all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description.
A very decorative and substantial example of antique folk carving, suitable as a jewelry box, keepsake casket or standalone piece of American/European folk art.
