Expressive, spontaneous and remarkably contemporary in appearance, these works offer an intimate glimpse into an artist’s creative process.

Believed to be preparatory studies created in the development of an illustrated book or similar publication, each drawing reveals the exploratory hand of the artist—rapid gestural lines, cross-hatching, architectural fragments and partially resolved forms appear and disappear across the paper. Rather than polished finished illustrations, these are working drawings: ideas captured as they were taking shape.

Viewed individually, each is a fascinating original work on paper. Displayed together, however, the six become something much more dramatic. Their varying densities of black ink, beautifully aged paper and generous areas of negative space create a sophisticated, almost abstract wall installation with a distinctly modern sensibility.

The drawings were acquired in Seekonk, Massachusetts in 2026 from an art dealer known for acquiring artists’ studio collections and were selected from a substantial body of original pen-and-ink works by this same illustrator. The artist’s identity and original publication have unfortunately been lost to history, adding an intriguing element of mystery to the collection.

Each original framed drawing measures approximately 13x10 inches and has been professionally framed with an expansive off white mat, contrasting dark inner border and coordinating warm gilt-finish frame. The restrained presentation allows the wonderful character and patina of the original paper to remain the focus.
