Provenance: Collection of Kuno Kallnbach (December 14, 1931 – June 9, 2018), Tann/Rhön

[Kallnbach was a patron of Friedrich Kunitzer and acquired approximately 150 of his works. He exhibited Kunitzer's works at his hotel in Engelsbach (Friedrichsroda, Finsterbergen district) and also endeavored to show his works publicly beyond the hotel.] In addition, Kallnbach owned an extensive collection of works by expressive realist artists such as Josef Liesler, Georg Muche, Hermann Naumann, Hans Peters, and Curt Querner.

The painting is featured on the front cover of the book "Unterwegs – Am Rande unseres Jahrhunderts. Zwischen Wolga und Rhein" (1987, Berlin/Bonn: Westkreuz-Verlag) by Friedrich Kunitzer.

In 1990, this painting was part of Kunitzer's solo exhibition in Tann, Rhön (organized by the Brandkasse, Hessische Brandversicherungsanstalt). [The painting is not pictured in the catalog but is mentioned in the accompanying text by Rainer Zimmermann.]

Friedrich Kunitzer

Painter, draftsman, illustrator, writer.

In 1918, the family fled to Lodz, where Kunitzer attended the German Gymnasium (high school).

In 1926, he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.

In 1929, he briefly studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and stayed in Worpswede.

In 1930, he studied in Paris at the Paris branch of the Krakow Academy (under Józef Pankiewicz).

In 1932, he performed compulsory military service in the Polish army in Volhynia.

In 1936, he received a scholarship to study at the Munich Academy, where he became a master student of Karl Caspar.

In 1937, he stayed at Karl Caspar's house in Brannenberg am Inn.

He then continued his studies in Munich (under Adolf Schinnerer).

In 1942, he served in the military and was taken prisoner.

In 1946, he obtained German citizenship and lived in Alsfeld.

In 1949, he moved to Wiesbaden, where he lived and worked until 1957.

In 1957, he married the Russian dancer Tamara Weiland and moved to\. Kördorf, where he built a log cabin and ran his own farm, including a fish farm.

1989 Second stay in Worpswede.

from 1996 onwards, living in a retirement home in Katzenelnbogen.
