Constructed in two parts, the … Read more A handsome 19th-century English pine linen press, combining generous storage with beautifully restrained country-house proportions. Constructed in two parts, the upper cabinet is crowned by a substantial molded cornice and fitted with a pair of paneled doors opening to reveal four removable sliding linen trays, traditionally used for neatly storing household linens and textiles.

The lower chest features three smaller drawers over two wide graduated drawers, retaining traditional brass bail pulls and keyholes. Simple molded detailing around the doors, broad drawer fronts and a substantial plinth base give the piece an architectural presence while allowing the beautifully aged pine to remain the focus.

The pine has developed a warm, mellow honey-colored surface with visible knots, grain, old marks and variations in tone that speak to its age and utilitarian history. Particularly desirable is the survival of the fitted interior linen trays, an important feature that clearly identifies the cabinet's original function as a linen press.

A wonderfully versatile antique with considerable storage, equally suited to a bedroom, dressing room, hallway or country kitchen.
