Measuring approximately 10 inches high × 8.5 inches wide, this unusually elaborate vessel combines exceptionally fine basketry with multiple decorative weaving techniques and applied floral and foliate ornamentation.

The rounded body is tightly woven in a rich reddish-brown tone and decorated with contrasting dark floral motifs wrapping around the exterior. Broad herringbone-patterned bands divide the composition, while additional floral decoration encircles the shoulder.

The original fitted lid is especially attractive, featuring a domed woven construction accented by radiating dark ribs and topped with a shaped knob. The opening is reinforced with a substantial finished rim.

The craftsmanship continues throughout the interior and underside. The interior retains its warm natural bamboo color and finely woven construction, while the recessed base is intricately woven and finished rather than left utilitarian. The contrast between the naturally toned interior and richly aged exterior gives the piece wonderful depth and character.

An impressive example of traditional Asian basketry with a highly sculptural form, equally appealing displayed as an antique vessel, decorative object or collector’s piece.

Condition: Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear throughout. Surface and finish wear are present around the lid and rim, along with scattered minor losses, breaks and irregularities to individual woven fibers and applied decoration consistent with age and handmade construction. The vessel and original fitted lid remain structurally intact and display beautifully. No restoration has been attempted.
