The robust cast-iron structure features naturalistic grapevine, … Read more Exceptional large-scale cast-iron wall lantern / architectural ironwork with a highly decorative presence. The robust cast-iron structure features naturalistic grapevine, leaves, tendrils and multiple bunches of grapes, combined with scrolling ornament, decorative finials and a central chalice-like element. A large polygonal caged lantern is suspended beneath the main structure.

the central circular element bears the initials “s am”; its significance has not been identified. According to previous ownership, the piece was formerly installed in an austrian gasthaus.

the combination of organic vine ornament and structured architectural cast-iron detailing gives the piece a distinctive art nouveau and neo-classical decorative character. The exact designer, date and place of manufacture are unknown.
