Dating to the late Progressive Era (circa 1890s–1910s), these heavy cast brass oval knobs were originally installed across the city's historic schoolhouses during an ambitious modernization project led by legendary school Superintendent Charles B. J. Snyder.

Each knob features striking, deep-relief embossed lettering that reads "PUBLIC SCHOOL / CITY OF NEW YORK," beautifully accented by an intricate decorative border.
