Charming vintage handmade Indian folk art elephant toy, hand carved from wood and elaborately hand painted and decorated with colorful textiles, sequins, beads and metallic embellishments.
The elephant is wonderfully articulated, with individually jointed legs, a movable head, ears and trunk, giving the piece an expressive, almost puppet-like quality. Its rich ceremonial-style trappings feature deep reds, turquoise, gold and jewel tones against the dark painted wooden body.
A particularly decorative example of Indian folk craftsmanship, equally appealing as a sculptural object, vintage toy or collected piece of global folk art. The elaborate ornamentation gives it a fantastic presence despite its relatively compact scale.
