Vintage Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Covered Temple Jar With Deer, Crane, Peonies & Calligraphy
A beautiful large-scale vintage Chinese porcelain covered temple jar, dating to the People’s Republic of China period and retaining its original paper country-of-origin label on the underside.
Standing approximately 15 inches tall and 9 inches wide, the jar has a gracefully shaped baluster body surmounted by a removable domed porcelain cover.
The principal hand-decorated scene depicts an elegant crane among flowering peonies, pine and foliage, accompanied by a spotted deer, rendered in a soft traditional palette of rose, coral, green, celadon, ochre and black.
The reverse is particularly interesting, featuring numerous Chinese calligraphic characters arranged vertically across the porcelain body. Additional calligraphy and colorful floral decoration appear on the lid.
The imagery draws upon traditional Chinese auspicious decorative themes associated with longevity, prosperity and good fortune.
The porcelain displays numerous characteristics of vintage hand-finished manufacture, including variations in the glaze and decoration, kiln irregularities, exposed ceramic surfaces at the foot and cover, and minor firing imperfections.
The underside retains an especially desirable original paper export label reading:
“MADE IN / The People’s / Republic Of China.”
The presence of this label establishes manufacture during the People’s Republic period rather than the earlier Republic of China period. The piece is believed to date approximately to the 1970s, although an exact year and factory have not been identified.
The original-style removable cover fits the jar well and displays age and construction consistent with the body.
An impressive decorative object at 15 inches tall, suitable for display on a console, chest, pedestal, mantel or as part of a collection of Chinese porcelain.
