An unusual piece of Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood history commemorating the conclusion of Seiji Ozawa's extraordinary 29-year tenure as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Created for the “Celebrating Seiji – Tanglewood Gala” held July 13, 2002, this substantial 18" × 12" commemorative print is executed on textured white paper and features a striking gestural image of the conductor with arms extended.

The illustration is expressly credited on the sheet:

“Illustration by Olga Koussevitzky.”

The upper portion reads “Celebrating Seiji – Tanglewood Gala,” while the lower portion prominently records:

Most notably, the print bears a large Seiji Ozawa signature prominently positioned beside the central illustration.

Particularly desirable is the survival of the accompanying original Tanglewood presentation material. The print remains together with its large original presentation envelope and original Tanglewood card bearing the Tanglewood name and address and prominently printed:

“Benefactor Gift.”

The survival of the print, signature, original envelope and Benefactor Gift presentation card together gives this example considerably greater historical context than a loose commemorative print.

The July 2002 Celebrating Seiji weekend marked the conclusion of Ozawa's historic tenure as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The July 13 gala formed part of this special farewell celebration at Tanglewood, with Ozawa's final Tanglewood performance as BSO Music Director following on July 14.
