Designed by … Read more Hand-knotted in wool and originating 1970-1979, this 4x6 vintage Swedish rya rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Scandinavian collection. Designed by celebrated textile artist Alice Gustafsson and titled “Pamir,” it features a striking, highly textural abstract medallion rendered in a vibrant, impressionistic blend of peacock blue, deep teal, lime green, and earthy ochre-yellow accents.

On the Design:

Among the most celebrated tactile traditions of twentieth-century Nordic weaving, Swedish rya rugs or *ryamatta* represent a profound synthesis of traditional folk craft and avant-garde fine art. Designed in 1973 by renowned Swedish textile artist Alice Gustafsson, this masterwork takes its evocative title from the legendary Pamir Mountains of Central Asia—a colossal range historically known as *Bam-i-Dunya*, or the "Roof of the World". Gustafsson translates the majestic spirit of this highland topography into a lush, impressionistic textile landscape. Rather than executing a rigid geographical map, the artist captures the atmospheric grandeur of high-altitude terrain: undulating ridgelines, alpine meadows, and glacial valleys translated through organic, biomorphic forms and a vibrant, nature-infused color palette.

The layout unfolds around a radiant, lime-green core populated by floating folk shapes in warm ochre, peacock blue, and deep brown, evocative of highland flora against sunlit peaks. This ambient center is encompassed by a deeply saturated, undulating border of rich teal and turquoise, framing the central medallion like a tranquil mountain lake or a twilight horizon. Executed in the classic rya technique, the weaving features a characteristically long, shaggy woolen pile with hand-tied knots spaced deliberately along the warp. This structural looseness creates exceptional tactile depth, allowing the fibers to shift fluidly and soften the boundaries between color blocks. Possessing a sumptuously soft handle, Gustafsson’s “Pamir” bridges the rugged majesty of Asia’s highest mountain range with the refined, modernist sensibilities of 1970s Swedish textile art.
