In Japanese … Read more Set of 2 Antique Japanese Edo period sumi-e ink painting of lucky Gods Hotei (Laughing Buddha) and Fukurokuju. In Japanese mythology, Hotei and Fukurokuju are two of the seven lucky Gods (Shichifukujin).

Hotei or the Laughing Buddha represents happiness and abundance. As in this painting, Hotei is often depicted with a fan (Oogi or Uchiwa), which signifies his authority and the ability to grant wishes. Furthermore, Hotei is often depicted with a “Karako” child (with unique hairstyles and cheerful expressions), which represent good fortune for the family.

Fukurokuju represents wisdom, longevity, and happiness. Originating from a Taoist hermit sage, he is known for his distinctively elongated forehead and long beard. In this painting, Fukurokuju is seen riding a turtle, which is also a symbol of longevity.

These paintings have been recovered (cut) from an antique scroll, folding screen, fusuma door or album leaf and have been newly framed.

CONDITION: Good condition for age. Please note that antique and vintage artworks may have traces of time, stains and creases due to age, so please review all photos.
