An exceptional early 20th-century French polychrome barbotine faience figural pitcher modeled as a crested parrot or cockatoo, standing an impressive 12.25 inches high. The bird is richly molded with feathered plumage and finished in translucent green, cobalt blue, ochre, burgundy and cream glazes.
The vessel incorporates a rear filling aperture and a small opening within the beak, where an old cork remains. This specialized construction is associated with French figural liqueur and absinthe pitchers of the period.
Although unmarked, the pitcher is attributed to the Keller & Guérin / Saint-Clément tradition and closely corresponds in scale and function to the documented Saint-Clément model 468, a 32 cm parrot pitcher known to have been used in connection with Garnier liqueurs.
France, circa 1900–1920.

Extensive overall crazing to the glaze, characteristic of early majolica/barbotine earthenware, with expected age-related surface variation and wear, particularly along the foot rim. Minor firing and glazing irregularities are present and are inherent to the manufacture. An old cork remains within the intentionally formed aperture in the beak and has been left undisturbed. The age of the cork cannot be definitively established. No cracks or significant structural damage observed. The beak appears intact; the circular area visible at the front is the cork-filled aperture rather than a chip. Please review photographs closely as they form part of the condition description. less
