A striking original Mid-Century Modern mixed-media work on paper, dated 1956, depicting an abstracted harbor village rendered in a richly layered palette of ochre, burgundy, slate blue, teal, charcoal, cream, and muted green.
The composition combines geometric architecture with expressive, densely worked mark-making. A compact village of colorful buildings and steeples stretches across the center of the work, opening onto an animated waterfront populated by small boats. Above, circular forms, linear patterns, and dramatically scaled architectural shapes create an almost dreamlike modernist landscape.
Particularly compelling is the artist's interplay between structure and spontaneity. Vertical and horizontal striped passages balance the central architectural forms, while repeated circular motifs move from the sky into the landscape below. The result has a distinctly postwar modernist character while retaining the warmth and accessibility of mid-century folk-influenced abstraction.
The work appears to incorporate multiple drawing and painting media on paper and is conservatively described as mixed media. It is signed lower right with an apparently legible first name “Eleanor” followed by an indistinct surname and dated ’56. Additional handwritten notations or inscriptions appear along the lower margin. The artist remains unidentified, and no definitive attribution is being made.
Presented under glass with a wide cream mat in a textured gilt and cream wood frame that complements the colors and period character of the artwork beautifully.

The frame has areas of loss and deterioration at the corners, including chipping and exposed wood, as shown in the photographs. There are additional scattered surface marks, rubbing, and finish loss to the frame consistent with age and use. The corner damage is most apparent when viewed closely and does not detract significantly from the overall presentation when displayed. The frame remains usable and the artwork displays beautifully as presented. Please review all photographs carefully, including detailed images of the frame corners, as they form an important part of the condition description. less
