A remarkable decorative set of eight antique french chromolithographs from antoine bisetzky's (1817-1892) *album comique*, also spelled bisetsky.
published in paris by becquet in 1884 and 1885, these period prints are chromolithographic facsimiles of watercolors. They humorously depict several personalities from the aristocratic, fashionable, and equestrian circles that frequented chantilly at the end of the 19th century.
the set includes:
the duke of castries
h. Gibson
the count of puiseux
mr. Musters
mr. Quiclet
mr. Charles lafitte
mr. G. Hugue
prince de joinville
each figure is presented in an original composition evoking horse racing, riding, fox hunting, or the leisure activities of french high society. The delicate colors, caricatured expressions, and numerous narrative details lend these works a singular charm.
antoine bisetzky occupied a privileged position from which to observe this society. A musician by training, he worked for the compagnie des chemins de fer du nord (northern railway company) before becoming stationmaster at chantilly in 1859. From the platforms, he watched aristocrats, hunters, and horse owners come and watch the races. His album comique (comic album) thus constitutes a veritable illustrated society diary of late 19th-century chantilly.
among the figures depicted is françois d’orléans, prince of joinville, the third son of king louis-philippe. A naval officer, he commanded the frigate la belle poule in 1840, tasked with bringing back the ashes of napoleon i from saint helena.
the eight works are presented under glass in matching black frames. Their uniform size allows for the creation of a spectacular gallery wall in a library, office, living room, or country house.
sold as a complete and inseparable set.
