The small spherical vase has a distinctive beehive form, with gently undulating horizontal bands encircling the body and a short neck terminating in a subtly flared lip. Made from fine translucent glass, the vase is treated with an iridescent surface layer that catches the light in shifting tones of pale pink, blue, green and gold. The restrained spherical profile and concentric ridges give the piece a strong Art Deco character, while the optical surface treatment accentuates the softly modeled contours. Andries Dirk Copier (1901–1991) was a central figure in 20th-century Dutch glass design and rose from working at the Leerdam factory as a young man to become its artistic director. The Nationaal Glasmuseum describes him as the most famous Dutch glass designer of the 20th century. During the 1920s and 1930s, Leerdam became an important center for progressive Dutch glass design, bringing modern artistic principles into both decorative and functional production. Copier began experimenting directly with glass in 1923, developing the Leerdam Unica and subsequently the Serica lines. His experiments included iridescence, produced at Leerdam by exposing hot glass to tin chloride vapor, a technique that created a thin, soap-film-like surface effect. Museum collections continue to preserve Copier's work from this period, including designs executed by Leerdam in 1930, underlining his established place within Dutch modernist glass design. The vase is signed to the underside with the acid-etched Copier/Leerdam monogram. Good vintage condition consistent with age and use. There are no chips or damage to the glass. The opalescent surface layer shows some wear, fine scratches and small patches of degradation, visible only upon close inspection. Otherwise, the vase presents well.
