An exceptional, commanding vertical mixed-media collage titled "Musician" by celebrated Chicago modernist painter and academic Fern Samuels (1931–2015). Standing at an impressive 61 inches tall, this dynamic assemblage piece features layered graphic shapes, numbers, architectural fragments, and stylized typographic elements interacting across a dark, textured field. The reverse is hand-signed and titled by the artist directly on the custom structural wooden framework.
About the Artist
Fern Samuels was a trailblazing figure in the mid-to-late 20th-century Chicago art scene. An alumna of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA), she taught for 25 years as an associate professor at Columbia College Chicago. Crucially, she was a founding member and past president of Chicago's historic ARC Gallery, one of the nation’s very first feminist cooperative exhibition spaces. Her works are held in numerous prestigious private collections and have been showcased in over 15 museum exhibitions across the country.
