The design is clearly structured: a cubic body, evenly spaced drawer fronts, and flanking columns create a calm, balanced proportion that, despite its compact footprint, appears aesthetically cohesive. Historical Context: In the last third of the 19th century, private and business correspondence increased significantly. Trade, crafts, and administration generated receipts, correspondence, and accounting records that had to be stored in an organized and secure manner. This gave rise to a distinct type of furniture, somewhere between a chest of drawers and a writing desk: compact enough for offices, shop back rooms, and middle-class living rooms, yet equipped with a writing surface, compartments, and a locking mechanism. Such pieces were found wherever work and storage took place – in offices, medical practices, workshops, and the studies of middle-class households. The serial production of solid oak furniture during this period allowed for robust constructions with turned decorative elements at reasonable costs, which explains the widespread use of historicist forms. Features include a central locking mechanism for the drawers via a laterally sliding lever beneath the hinged lid – all drawers are secured with a single movement. A side-mounted, green-covered writing surface with a brass knob provides additional storage space for documents without increasing the overall footprint. Design: Historicism, Neo-Renaissance style, last quarter of the 19th century. The structure follows a strict vertical scheme: a profiled base with projecting corner blocks, a drawer section with paneled fronts, and a top section with a continuous profiled edge. The laterally projecting, turned columns (rope rods) rhythmically punctuate the front and are the only ornamental element; carving and appliqués are deliberately omitted. The pull handles are slender and restrained in their proportions. The back is finished with a smooth, flat surface, making the piece freestanding. Formerly used as a writing and storage unit for correspondence, documents, and valuables in an office or study. Today: a storage and organization unit for the hallway, living room, or office, as a side table, telephone or key cabinet, for writing utensils, documents, or collectibles; the casters allow for flexible placement.

Dimensions: Height 76 cm × Width 50 cm × Depth 50 cm. Material and condition: Solid oak, metal handles and fittings, pull-out shelf with green covering (material type not definitively identifiable), brass knob, casters. Key for the desk compartment included. Well-preserved, age-appropriate condition with visible patina and signs of use. The back panel and sides show age-related cracks in the wood; stability and function are not affected. A few dark stains are visible on the lid. Drawers run smoothly, drop-down lid, latch, and pull-out shelf are functional. See less
