Signed and inscribed by the artist: "Knockwurst with Fork, H. Simon 1993." This piece reflects a period in Simon's practice, as he described in his own artist statement, exploring still life and single-object sculpture using everyday objects rendered in metal to create aesthetic distance from their ordinary function.

Herbert Simon studied with Hans Hofmann, Robert Motherwell, and Philip Guston in the late 1940s and early 1950s, before teaching sculpture and three-dimensional design at Wilkes University from 1969–1992. His public works are installed throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania, including "Facets" at Wilkes University and "Two Modules" in Coal Street Park, both in Wilkes-Barre, and "Aloft" at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP) in Avoca.
