A prestigious ceremonial chair, historically referred to as a stool due to its contoured backrest and rigid wooden seat, crafted … Read more A prestigious ceremonial chair, historically referred to as a stool due to its contoured backrest and rigid wooden seat, crafted in the Neo-Renaissance style, dating from the second half of the 19th century. The frame is made of ebonised solid wood, finely inlaid with ivory, with details created using a burin engraving technique and filled with dark ink to highlight the finest anatomical and decorative details (the ‘Certosino’ or ‘grotesque’ inlay technique). Inspired by the famous Italian Renaissance stools of the sixteenth century, this type of seat was very much in vogue in the nineteenth century for furnishing noble salons, studies and art galleries, representing a perfect example of the very finest cabinet-making and engraving decoration. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
