An … Read more Exceptional pair of ‘Inka’ lounge chairs designed by Karel Koželka and Antonín Kropáček in 1944 for Interiér Praha, Czechoslovakia. An important and highly recognizable example of Czech modernist furniture design, this celebrated model formed part of the designers’ award-winning furniture ensemble, which received a silver medal at the Milan Triennale. The design is distinguished by its beautifully sculpted bentwood construction, with sweeping armrests flowing organically into the legs. The upholstered seat and backrest are suspended within the wooden structure, creating an exceptionally elegant balance between architectural form, lightness and comfort. Particularly attractive are the exposed supporting straps beneath the seat and the open horizontal back construction, details that emphasize the functionalist character of the design. This pair retains a wonderfully authentic vintage appearance. The dark-stained wooden frames display an attractive patina with wear consistent with age and use. The chairs are presented in their existing red upholstery. We recommend having the chairs reupholstered locally after purchase, allowing the new owner or interior designer to select a bespoke fabric perfectly suited to the intended interior. A high-quality wool, mohair, bouclé or textured neutral fabric would complement the sculptural wooden frames particularly well. Koželka and Kropáček's 1944 seating design is today regarded as an important example of post-war Czech design, combining the traditions of bentwood furniture with a distinctly modern architectural vocabulary. with their low proportions, sweeping curves and highly recognizable silhouette, these chairs work beautifully as statement pieces in both contemporary and sophisticated eclectic interiors. The existing upholstery shows age-related wear. Local reupholstery is recommended, allowing the buyer to choose a fabric and finish appropriate to their interior. The chairs remain structurally sound.
