The piece … Read more This elegant Bjorn Wiinblad for Rosenthal Mid-Century Porcelain Vase w/ 24kt Gold Overlay originated in Germany, circa 1980. The piece has a tall cylindrical body that rises to a gently flared rim and is formed in fine white glazed porcelain, its silhouette reflecting Mid-Century restraint and clarity. A hand painted polychrome figural motif wraps the body in saturated tones of turquoise, lavender, green and orange and is composed with lively stylized lines that favor graphic modernist rhythms. 24 karat gold overlay accents are applied as delicate outlines and stippled highlights that lift the enamel decoration and animate the glossy surface. Bjørn Wiinblad took inspiration from music, theatre and from the world of fairy tales. He designed ceramics using a range of techniques, but his work also ranged from posters, postcards, stage backdrops for theatre and ballets to bronzes, tapestries and even drapery and wallpaper. He was a major influence in developing the fantastical element of Rosenthal’s studio-line with his multitude of ceramic decorations and gift items. Born in Copenhagen in 1918 and died in 2006. The construction merges a refined thin walled porcelain form with expressive enamel brushwork and careful metal application so that the object reads as both painterly and precise. The clean rim and pared base contribute to the streamlined silhouette while the colorful scene provides a distinctly modernist personality, making the vase a notable example of late twentieth century European porcelain finished with precious metal ornamentation.
