This substantial decorative chess set features a 16-inch square inlaid stone board with alternating translucent white calcite/onyx and richly colored reddish-brown banded stone squares. A wide translucent stone border with mitered corners surrounds the playing surface.

The complete set of 32 sculptural chess pieces is individually carved and polished from contrasting natural stone. One side features luminous translucent white calcite/onyx, while the opposing pieces display exceptional natural banding in shades of burgundy, rust, brown, cream and muted green.

The pieces have an expressive Mid-Century sculptural quality, including elongated kings and queens, stylized horse-head knights, bishops and rounded pawns. Because each piece is carved from natural stone, the coloration, veining and translucency vary considerably from piece to piece.

The board is substantial stone construction rather than a lightweight wood-backed game board. The unfinished underside retains visible fabrication and polishing marks characteristic of its manufacture.

Both a functional chess set and a dramatic decorative object, this set would make an impressive addition to a library, study, game room, coffee table or Mid-Century interior.

Attributed to Mexican manufacture based upon the stone, construction and carving style. No maker’s mark or original label has been located.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear and imperfections.

The stone board displays surface scratches, polishing marks, minor edge wear and small areas of loss/chipping consistent with age and use. Several chess pieces exhibit previous repairs, chips and/or losses, particularly among the lighter-colored pieces. Natural fissures, inclusions, veining and color variations are inherent characteristics of the stone and should not necessarily be considered damage.
